Borderlands 4 Boss Guide: How to Beat Every Major Boss
Boss fights in Borderlands 4 are the best they've been since Borderlands 2. Gearbox finally figured out that bullet sponges aren't fun and gave every major boss actual mechanics. Here's how to handle each one.
I've beaten every boss on Mayhem 3 with all four Vault Hunters, so these strategies are class-agnostic unless noted. Most pre-release guides got details wrong - boss mechanics changed between the review build and the day-one patch.
Order Enforcer - Ironhold Processing Facility
Your first real boss. Big armored synth with a flamethrower and missile pods. Two phases.
Phase 1: standard bullet sponge with telegraphed attacks. The flamethrower sweep always goes left-to-right - dodge right as soon as you see the pilot light ignite. The missile barrage fires three volleys with a gap between each. Count the missiles: one-two-three, move, repeat.
Phase 2 starts at 50% health. The Enforcer deploys two shock turrets on elevated platforms. Kill these first. They have low HP but their shock DOT stacks and will melt your shield in about three seconds. Once turrets are down, the Enforcer gains a new attack - a charging slam that covers half the arena. Jump over it. Not dodge - jump. The hitbox doesn't extend vertically.
Weakness: shock damage to strip the shield, then incendiary for the armor underneath. Jakobs revolvers with shock element are ideal. Don't use corrosive - the Enforcer's armor has hidden corrosive resistance. I honestly don't know why. It's not in the bestiary. Tested it.
Warden Kael - The Prison District
First real skill check. Kael is a humanoid Order commander with a personal shield generator that regenerates after 8 seconds of not taking damage. You can't burst him down in one cycle early game unless you have a legendary.
The arena has four shield generator pylons in the corners. Kael is invulnerable while at least one is active. Destroy the pylons, DPS Kael during the 8-second shield gap, repeat. The pylons respawn after Kael's shield comes back, so you're doing this cycle 3-4 times.
During shield-down phases, Kael teleports around the arena and fires tracking projectiles. They follow you for about 3 seconds and deal massive damage if they connect. Run perpendicular to their flight path - they can't turn sharply. If one is about to hit, double jump and glide to break tracking.
This fight is harder on Amon than other characters because Kael resists shock damage during shield phases. Switch to corrosive or incendiary for the DPS window.
The Corrupted Vault Beast - Eridian Excavation Site
Mid-game boss with three phases and elemental shifting. The Beast starts as incendiary, shifts to corrosive at 60% health, and shock at 30% health. Its resistances mirror its current element - it takes 50% reduced damage from the element it's currently using.
Carry at least two weapon elements into this fight. I use shock + incendiary. Shock for the incendiary and corrosive phases, incendiary for the shock phase. Avoid corrosive weapons entirely - the beast's corrosive phase has adds that are immune to corrosive.
Phase 3 (shock) is the dangerous one. The arena floods with electrified water that damages you if you stand still. Keep moving. The grappling hook (Rafa) or double jump (everyone) keeps you off the ground long enough to avoid ticks. There are four raised platforms in the arena - use them.
The Beast drops the "Vault Hunter's" legendary artifact at about a 10% rate. Worth farming if you're struggling with later bosses - the artifact gives +25% damage against bosses permanently.
The Timekeeper - Final Boss, The Spire
The Timekeeper is a two-part encounter. First part: you fight him directly on the Spire's observation deck. Second part: he pilots a giant mech suit. The transition between phases has no checkpoint, so dying in phase 2 means redoing phase 1.
Phase 1 - The Timekeeper Direct:
He uses a combination of Bolts (homing projectiles that apply a short stun) and time-manipulation fields that slow you if you stand in them. The fields are visible as golden circles on the ground - don't stand in gold. His personal shield is massive and regenerates quickly. Shock weapons are mandatory.
At 75% and 50% health, he teleports to a random corner of the arena and summons two Order Elites. Kill the Elites first - they buff the Timekeeper's damage if left alive.
At 25% health, he does a desperation attack: fills most of the arena with time-slowing fields, leaving only narrow pathways. This is the "DPS check." Pop your action skill and burn him. If your build is under-geared, this is where the run ends.
Phase 2 - Chronos Mech:
Full health bar, new mechanics. The mech has six weak points: two on the arms, two on the legs, one on the back, one on the head. Destroying a weak point stuns the mech for 5 seconds and prevents it from using that limb's attack.
Priority order: arms first (removes the missile barrage and the gravity slam), then legs (stops the charge attack), then back (disables the drone spawner), then head. Head takes double damage once all other weak points are destroyed.
The mech's most dangerous attack is the Chrono Beam - a sweeping laser that applies a stacking slow effect. If you get hit by the beam, your movement speed drops by 20% per tick. At 5 stacks you're frozen for 3 seconds. Use the arena's pillars to break line of sight. The beam can't penetrate cover.
Recommended level: 35+. Recommended gear: at least one shock legendary weapon, an adaptive shield, and a grenade with the "singularity" effect to group adds during phase 1.
After beating the Timekeeper, you unlock Mayhem Mode and Eridian Rifts. The boss drops a guaranteed legendary weapon on first kill, random on subsequent farms. His dedicated loot pool includes the "Temporal" legendary shotgun (fires projectiles that apply slow) and the "Kairos" class mod (random Vault Hunter, +2 to all tier-1 skills).
Honestly, the boss fights in BL4 are the best Gearbox has done since Borderlands 2. Each one feels different - the Enforcer teaches you weak points, Kael teaches you arena awareness, the Vault Beast teaches you elemental switching, and the Timekeeper tests everything you've learned. It's a genuinely well-designed difficulty curve. I've beaten all of them on Mayhem 3 with four different Vault Hunters, and the fights feel different depending on who you're playing. Vex can hang back and let turrets do work while watching for mechanics. Rafa has to be in the boss's face constantly, which means you learn tells faster or die trying. Try a different character if you're stuck on a boss. Sometimes the issue isn't your skill - it's the matchup.
